Science Fiction Writer Neil Stevenson Launches Metaverse Blockchain Project

American science fiction writer Neil Stevenson, who first coined the term "metaverse", is launching his own metaverse-focused blockchain project.

Neal Stephenson is best known for his 1992 science fiction novel Avalanche, in which he explored the concept of a virtual reality world. It was in this novel that the term "metaverse" was first used.

In his book, the metaverse is presented as a virtual city, the entrance to which is carried out using a special headset. It raises themes of social inequality, corporate control and the ubiquitous advertising that has filled people's lives.

According to a blog post, Neil Stevenson is launching a new project called LAMINA1 with former Bitcoin Foundation Chairman Peter Vessenes. It will be a first-level blockchain, which its creators hope will become the basic solution for a truly open metaverse.

“It will be a place that we will try to bring closer to the vision of the Nile - a place that gives privileges to technical and artistic creators. It will provide support for spatial computing technologies and the community that will develop it,” Vessenes said.

According to the businessman, Stevenson will bring to the project his vision, experience, wisdom and some of his ideas, such as helping the environment and a decent pay to the creators of the metaverse. The new metaverse will not be the product of corporations that seek to monopolize the realm, Vessenes says.

The businessman also noted that he will focus on the rapid launch of the blockchain as he works to build the necessary governance and technology, as well as attract artists, business partners and funds.

Earlier, Unity CEO John Riccitiello said that in the next few years, most websites will move to the metaverse.
