France may use blockchain to sell tickets for the 2024 Olympics

The French Olympic Committee is exploring the use of blockchain to sell tickets for the upcoming 2024 Olympics.

Michel Cadot, the French government's Interministerial Delegate for the Olympic Games, has submitted amendments to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to the French Prime Minister's Office. Some of the recommendations relate to the ticketing system for the event and involve the use of blockchain. According to Cado's proposal, fans will be able to buy tickets using a special QR code. Purchased tickets will not be transferable to another person, they will be sent to users a few days before the start of the Olympiad.

Upon entering the venue, each ticket holder is registered and their ticket is deactivated. According to Cado, the use of blockchain will provide fans with additional security. They will be able to receive useful information via digital channels, such as safety rules during the Olympic Games, or how to get to the competition venue from anywhere in Paris. Cado believes that blockchain can be successfully used for ticketing and other major sporting events organized in France.

Blockchain provisions could be implemented for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the International Tennis Tournament in France. However, Cado's proposal must be approved by the French authorities. The updated provisions came after the unrest during the match in the Champions League final between the Spanish "Real Madrid" and the English "Liverpool", held recently in Paris. The match was delayed by more than 30 minutes after thousands of British fans showed up without tickets or tried to present a fake ticket.

Recall that during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Chinese authorities allowed athletes and foreign tourists to use the digital yuan, despite the concerns of some US politicians that it could be used to “surveillance” people. And yet, the digital yuan was in good demand at the Olympics, as the number of transactions with it exceeded the number of payments through Visa.
